Check and Cook on the Go

Check and Cook
Have you ever found yourself staring at a practically empty fridge with the exception of a few items you have no idea what to do with? Have you ever found yourself with a surplus of a certain ingredient you had to buy in bulk only to use like a tenth of it in a recipe with no idea what to do with the rest? Or have you ever found yourself getting tired of your go-to recipes and wish you had a new recipe to try with the same ingredients? I have to say I’ve experienced all three scenarios at different times in my life and still do as a busy mom. That’s why when I was recently approached about an app called Check and Cook, I was very curious and interested to find out more.

Check and Cook
Check and Cook is an iPhone and iPad compatible app that allows you to enter the ingredients you have on hand by choosing from a list or a search tool and then you simply shake your device or click the “Check & Cook” button and it will generate up to 41,000 recipes that incorporate the ingredients you have entered. You also get to specify which recipe category you’re looking for whether it’s appetizers, main dish or dessert. Search results may also include recipes that will require additional ingredients.

Vichyssoise and Gazpacho
When I tested it out, I happened to have some leeks left over in the fridge along with potatoes and onions in my pantry, which are staples in my household. When I did a search with these ingredients and a couple more (you must enter a minimum of 5 ingredients) and I selected the ‘soup’ category, I was given a list of 198 soup recipes. I was glad to find a recipe for Vichyssoise, a potato and leek soup served chilled, which I thought would be perfect for this warm weather. I also had some tomatoes on hand, so I decided to keep with the soup theme and make a Gazpacho. I went directly to the Check and Cook recipe list and found several Gazpacho recipes. I found a simple one I could try and customize to my liking. I brought out some bread, cheese and fruit and we ended up with a nice spread for dinner.

Check and Cook also gives you the ability to add your own recipes and share them with other users as well as add existing recipes to a Favorites List for easy access. I like the idea that if you’re doing some last minute grocery shopping and can’t think of what to make for dinner, you can look up a recipe on your iPhone using Check and Cook and know exactly what to buy while you’re at the store. Check and Cook definitely has room to grow but it suits my needs for now as I often find myself wondering what to do with leftover ingredients in my fridge and I’m always on the lookout for new and easy recipes to try. For those of you who are interested, the app will be released and become available worldwide tomorrow, June 20th.

Free access to Check and Cook was provided for review purposes. All opinions presented here are my own.
