Well, I’m not ready to give in or give up. I am determined to not only survive this winter but actually enjoy it. No more wasting my time away wishing for spring. In order to make that happen, I put together what I’m calling a Winter Survival Guide. Here’s my list of tips, suggestions, good finds, etc., that will help you (and hopefully me) thrive during these chilly winter months.<span id="more-5550"></span></p> <p><strong>1) Keep your face hydrated</strong> – I don’t know about you but my skin gets really thirsty in the winter. No matter how much moisturizer I slather on my face, I still feel patches of dryness. I’ve been using a face spray daily before my moisturizer and makeup in order to give my skin that extra hydration it needs. I’m currently using <a title="Urban Decay B6 Vitamin-Infused Complexion Prep Spray" href="http://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=432223341&pid=uid4900-24612570-61" target="_blank">Urban Decay B6 Vitamin-Infused Complexion Prep Spray</a> but I’m also planning to try <a title="Clinique Moisture Surge Face Spray" href="http://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=423820057&pid=uid4900-24612570-61" target="_blank">Clinique Moisture Surge Face Spray</a> and <a title="Evian Mineral Water Spray" href="http://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sephora.com%2Fmineral-water-spray-duo-to-go-P230538%3FskuId%3D1154897&pid=uid4900-24612570-61" target="_blank">Evian Mineral Water Spray</a>.</p> <p><strong>2) Stock up on cozy fuzzy socks</strong> – when I got a pair of these soft fuzzy socks for Christmas a few years ago, I was thinking, “Where have you been all my life?” These fluffy socks are all I wear all winter long. You can get colorful ones like <a title="Women's Soft and Warm Fuzzy Sock Pack" href="http://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FWomens-Soft-Warm-Fuzzy-Packs%2Fdp%2FB009VUSDN6%2Fref%3Dpd_sim_a_15%3Fie%3DUTF8%26refRID%3D0YCGJGEZJ1DG8NPTHDFP&pid=uid4900-24612570-61" target="_blank">these</a> or neutral ones like <a title="MUK LUKS Women's 3-Pack Crew Socks" href="http://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.target.com%2Fp%2Fmuk-luks-women-s-3-pack-crew-socks-aloe-one-size-fits-most%2F-%2FA-15040473%23prodSlot%3Dlarge_1_5&pid=uid4900-24612570-61" target="_blank">these</a>. There is nothing better than warm and cozy feeling feet on a cold winter’s day.</p> <p><strong>3) Enjoy a hot drink</strong> – this is your chance to indulge in all sorts of hot drinks from herbal tea to hot chocolate and cider and of course, coffee. I still remember thoroughly enjoying a nice cup of hot cider this past Thanksgiving at my brother’s and sister-in-law’s house. Check out these <a title="15 Soul-Warming Cider Recipes - Martha Stewart" href="http://www.marthastewart.com/950263/15-delicious-cider-recipes" target="_blank"><em>15 Soul-Warming Cider Recipes</em></a> from Martha Stewart.</p> <p><strong>4) Soup does your body good</strong> – soothe your body and soul with a warm bowl of soup. I find myself wanting to make soup regularly during the winter months. I shared a <a title="Tuscan Soup" href="http://myrosecoloredshades.com/2014/01/09/recipe-highlight-tuscan-soup/">Tuscan Soup recipe</a> on the blog previously and my favorite <a title="The Lady's Chicken Noodle Soup Recipe" href="http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paula-deen/the-ladys-chicken-noodle-soup-recipe.html" target="_blank">Chicken Noodle Soup recipe</a> is the one from Paula Deen. My only adjustment to that recipe is that I use store-bought low sodium chicken stock instead of making my own.</p> <p><strong>5) Read a “feel-good” or motivational book</strong> – the chicken noodle soup talk reminded me of the book, <a title="Chicken Soup for the Soul" href="http://www.chickensoup.com" target="_blank">Chicken Soup for the Soul</a>. If there’s a book out there that makes you feel good or even better, gets you fired up and re-energized for life, now is the time to read it. My favorite go-to book for motivation is <a title="The Purpose Driven Life" href="http://www.purposedriven.com" target="_blank">The Purpose Driven Life</a> by Rick Warren. I always find it to be a good reminder of my purpose and how I need to live my life.</p> <p><strong>6) When the going gets tough, the tough keeps working out</strong> – the key to combatting those winter blues and the lack of energy and motivation that it brings, is to keep a regular workout routine. I seriously think that exercise is the only thing that keeps me going in the winter. My workout of choice is doing <a title="Title Boxing" href="http://titleboxingclub.com" target="_blank">kickboxing</a> 2-3 times a week. It’s a struggle to get myself to the gym but once I’m there and I finish a workout, it’s the best feeling.</p> <p><strong>7) Plan a fun indoor activity to look forward to every weekend</strong> – weekends are busy but whenever we have a block of time available, we try to squeeze in a fun indoor activity like roller skating, going to the movies, bowling, etc. This way, you always have something to look forward to on the weekend, which in turn, helps with keeping you motivated during the week.</p> <p><strong>8) If you can’t beat it, join it</strong> – I admit that I’m not a huge fan of outdoor activities in the winter but my kids love it so they’re always asking to go outside to play in the snow. A snow fight every now and then can be invigorating. My husband also takes the girls sledding when conditions are right. I remember, in my college days, how we used to “borrow” trays from the cafeteria and go sledding down this huge slope at my school. And of course, there’s always skiing. We haven’t tackled skiing as a family yet but that will probably change real soon.</p> <p><strong>9) Good time to organize your closet/office/pantry</strong> – if the weather is keeping you indoors, then take advantage of it. Now is the best time to get to those home projects you’ve been pushing to the back burner. I know a lot of you have already accomplished this but my number one priority right now is to clean out my closet and the girls’ closets. I don’t know why it seems so daunting to me but I have no more excuses left. My study and kitchen pantry are next. They both could use some organizing and tidying up. If you have the time and money, now is the perfect time to get away. Fortunately, this year we’ll be taking a family trip to Disney World. Although I personally would have preferred Hawaii or the Caribbean, I’ll take Disney World any day if it means I’m getting away from the snow for a few days. If you’re low on budget, a weekend getaway to a water park a few hours drive away or even a local hotel with a big indoor pool may help break up the dreary monotony of winter.</p> <p>And did I mention shopping? As our days became filled with summer camps and I saw the joy in my girls’ faces as they finally got to enjoy sunny days and warm weather thru various outdoor activities, I didn’t have the heart to enforce my intended daily reading quota.<span id="more-3835"></span></p> <p>Fortunately, my 10-year-old, who is an avid reader, kept up with her reading. She would beg me to take her to the library to borrow more books. Due to our busy schedule, making trips to the library at the same rate that my 10-year-old devoured her books was not feasible so I was glad when I noticed my daughter downloading online books on a regular basis, which makes for a great option for those times we’re not able to get to the library.</p> <p>When I was given the opportunity to review <em>The Adventures of Ai</em>, a new fantasy novel for preteens, I didn’t give it much thought at first since I don’t typically do book reviews, but as I read more about the book, it really intrigued me. It sounded like the perfect book for my 10-year-old. Here’s a brief synopsis of the book:</p> <p><strong><em>Using nonfiction elements, this novel, set in pre-renaissance Japan, unlocks the potential of a global generation of preteens. The unique story intertwines independence, strength and the determination required of kids today with unquenchable imagination. Art, history, poetry, music, and mathematics find their way into the dangerous journey of an eleven-year-old-Japanese girl in search of treasure and her father in the year 1514. Released in six languages and distributed through one of the greatest 3D video games of 2014, The Adventures of Ai is a story of empowerment transcending global boundaries.</em></strong></p> <p>Instead of just reading the book myself, I asked my daughter to read it and I wasn’t surprised when she finished it in one sitting. I asked her to tell me about the book and her opinions on it. I think that the non-fiction elements and the different narrative voices confused her a little bit at first but it also made things more interesting and forced her to pay more attention. Where did the summer go? It’s around this time that I start panicking and try to jam-pack the rest of the summer with as many activities as possible for fear that the cooler weather is hiding just around the corner and ready to spoil the fun. There are certain things we do every summer as a family, some of which have become tradition over the years. I thought I’d share our top ten summer must-dos that we’ve enjoyed as a family for the past several years and still do!<span id="more-3317"></span></p> <p><strong>1. Go to the Beach</strong> – I don’t care if you live in the mountains, in the desert or under a rock. You need to get yourself to a body of water with sand, whether it’s fresh water or salt water. Summer just doesn’t feel right without a day or two at the beach. Our family spends a week in South Haven, on the west shores of Michigan, almost every summer and our girls love it. We may venture out a little further in the near future since they’re getting older.</p> <p><strong>2. Do a Car Wash</strong> – Our girls have a lot of fun washing our cars on hot summer days. They have fun playing with water and get paid on top of that! We get clean cars. It’s a win-win situation. And of course, don’t forget that sunscreen!</p> <p><strong>3. Go <del datetime="2014-07-25T02:06:59+00:00">Camping</del> Glamping</strong> – Ok, I added this one with a bit of hesitation. I love the idea of being one with nature, sleeping under the stars and eating freshly cooked meals al fresco. However, the operative word here is ‘idea’. I love the idea but actually doing it is a lot more work than I care to do on a vacation. My girls have a great time but that’s because they don’t do any work! I think I’m going to change this one to “Go Glamping,” until your kids are old enough to do all the work.</p> <p><strong>4. Catch Fireflies</strong> – This is something my husband and my girls like to do together. Each of the girls take a jar and lid with holes drilled into them and go chasing after fireflies in the dark. Of course, you have to remember to let them go after you catch them. Chalk Your Driveway</strong> – Get a set of sidewalk chalk and let the kids go to town. This is great for play dates on a sunny day. The best part, the mess stays outside, although their hands and clothes do get a little chalky.</p> <p><strong>6. Make Lemonade</strong> – And pour yourself a nice tall glass of ice cold lemonade or set up a lemonade stand. Summer and lemonade just go together. You can’t have one without the other. My eldest and her friend tried to do a lemonade stand last year. There isn’t a lot of traffic in our subdivisions so they ended up becoming a door-to-door lemonade service.</p> <p><strong>7. Fly a Kite</strong> – It’s always fun to see a kite soar in the sky and it’s easy enough that your little ones can try it too. Clear skies with a wind speed of 5-15 mph is the ideal weather condition for most standard kites.</p> <p><strong>8. Go to a Fair</strong> – This is another summer tradition for us. There is something for everyone to do at a fair. The girls love the rides but they also love getting prizes from the games. They got so excited when their Dad won them a goldfish one time. It reminds me of the time when my husband and I went to a fair when we were still dating and how excited I was to have him win a stuffed animal for me. Those were the good old days.</p> <p><strong>9. Have a Slurpee…Every Week</strong> – Almost every Sunday afternoon after church, we drive down to the 7-Eleven just a mile away from our church and treat ourselves to a big refreshing Slurpee. There is nothing better than a Slurpee on a hot summer afternoon.</p> <p><strong>10. Wear Flip Flops</strong> – Remember when winter wouldn’t go away and you wondered if your toes would ever see the light of day and you couldn’t wait to wear your cute little flip flops. Well, now is the time! Wear them every day. Wear them like they’re going out of style. My girls would wear them all year long if they could.</p> <p>Would love to hear from you. My love for the nautical theme is not limited to apparel but extends over to home decor as well. Like most homes with young children, my basement currently looks like a cluttered toy store with stuffed animals strewn about, Barbie dolls missing a shoe or two, and a myriad of Lego pieces scattered across the carpet. Amid the clutter, you can see hints of my unfinished attempt at a beach cottage “retreat”. We recently had a couple of relatives visiting, and having to get the basement ready for their stay rekindled my desire to finish my coastal themed decor project. I don’t want to overdo it but there are still a few things that I’d like to add. So, as always, I had to do some inspiration seeking on Pinterest and several other sites to find my favorite nautical themed goodies. Along the way I would stumble upon other really cool items that would catch my attention, whether it would be an inspiring quote, a practical tool that I knew would come in handy, an innovative idea, or simply eye candy. In my tunnel vision afflicted obsessive state, I would fail to bookmark these discoveries and instead just make a quick mental note to check back later. A couple of weeks later, I would find myself beating my head against the wall because, for the life of me, I could not remember where I had seen the doggone item. There have been way too many of these frustrating moments so I’m not taking any more chances. Whenever I come across a good find, I will pin it, luv it, clip it, bookmark it, whatever it takes for me to recall it for future reference. It is a haven away from the noise and chaos where silence is expected and appreciated. It’s been a longtime dream of mine to build a library in my own home that I can retreat to from time to time; a place for the body to find repose while letting the mind explore and journey to distant places by way of the written word. I also feel that there is nothing more aesthetically pleasing than an endless row of tomes of different colors and shapes placed in various coordinated positions. To know that these objects may potentially possess within them useful knowledge and life-changing wisdom make them that much more appealing. Above are a few of the home libraries that boast features that I appreciate and hope to someday soon incorporate into my own home library design.
