Our family spent six nights at Disney World from February 10-16 of this year. This was our first family vacation at Disney World and although we had an amazing time, there were quite a few things that I’ve learned during our time there that makes me want to go back and do it right or better the second time around. By no means am I an expert on the subject now but I’d like to share a few tips and recommendations from my personal experience that I think may be helpful to those of you who are planning your first visit to Disney World in the near future.<span id="more-6009"></span></p>
<p><strong>Where to Stay</strong></p>

<p>This is a tough one only because the options are endless. You have the option to stay in a Disney World resort inside the DW complex or stay at a nearby hotel right outside of DW. It all depends on your needs and preferences.</p>
<p>We decided to stay at a Disney World resort as it was recommended by many I’ve spoken to and reviews I’ve read. We stayed at the Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa. Since we were a party of seven as my parents came with us, we needed to find a hotel that offered 2-bedroom suites, which Saratoga Springs offered at a reasonable price. Saratoga Springs is a sprawling Victorian-style resort with a golf course, 5 different pools, a spa and many other amenities. Depending on which section of the resort you stay in, it may be a hike to get to the main building where the restaurants and main desk/concierge are located. We stayed in the Grandstand section, which was a 3-minute walk to the main building and steps away from the bus stop. We were also the first ones to get on the bus on the way to the parks and the first ones to get off the bus on the way back, which proved to be extremely convenient.</p>
<p>The next time we go, it’ll probably be just our family of five so we would most likely stay at the Contemporary Resort, not only because of convenient access to the monorail but also due to our personal preferences in terms of style and amenities.</p>
<p><strong>Food</strong></p>

<p>My preconceptions about the restaurants at Disney World were that they were overpriced and not very good. We were pleasantly surprised by a couple of the restaurants we decided to dine at. I do have to mention, though, that I did some research on the restaurants before I made reservations so it definitely pays off to read the reviews and recommendations in order to find a restaurant that will suit your family’s palate. And I would recommend that you start making reservations 6 months in advance, if you’re able, because the popular restaurants get filled very quickly.</p>
<p>We really enjoyed our dinner at California Grill at the Contemporary Resort, which is an award-winning restaurant that offers fresh and seasonal ingredients with flavors of the Pacific Coast. The best part is the rooftop view. The entire dining area is surrounded by windows so we had a beautiful view of the sunset.</p>

<p>We also liked Cítricos at the Grand Floridian Resort where we had brunch and mingled with the Disney Princesses. The brunch was very good but the atmosphere was even better. Character dining is a must if you have young children. I could see my 5-year-old’s eyes light up as different princesses came by our table to chat, give out hugs and take pictures.</p>

<p>If you’re staying at a Disney World resort, I would definitely recommend getting a dining plan unless you’re really particular about how you order your food and/or plan to consume a lot of alcoholic beverages. Included in the plan for each meal was a non-alcoholic drink, an entree and a dessert and there were certain premium dishes that were excluded. We would have liked the flexibility of ordering an appetizer instead of dessert but unfortunately that was not an option. Regardless, considering the upcharge at all these Disney restaurants, the daily cost of food came out a lot cheaper with the dining plan even after adding tips and extras that are not included. I would definitely recommend it for large parties.</p>

<p>One of the conveniences of staying in a Disney World resort is that you get to use their transportation. There are buses, boats and a monorail system. Even though during busy times, you may be waiting for a while for the bus and may even need to take two modes of transportation to get to your final destination, you’re avoiding having to deal with finding a parking spot every time you get to a new place. I could imagine that being a nightmare during busy seasons.</p>
<p>The only times we wished we had our own car was when we were running late to dinner or to drive to a local grocery store to get breakfast items as our meal plan only included two meals per day. Our resort had a small grocery store for basic needs and it turned out to be sufficient for us. In addition, there was also the option to have breakfast at the resort restaurants.</p>
<p><strong>Parks & Rides</strong></p>

<p>I would highly recommend doing your research on each of the Disney parks and deciding which rides/attractions you and your family might be interested in and plan ahead as much as possible. Otherwise, you’ll be wasting precious time deciding and waiting in line. We purchased a 4-day pass to the parks as part of our package. We could have visited all four parks (Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Epcot and Hollywood Studios). However, based on what we had heard and read about Hollywood Studios and our girls’ interests, we decided to skip this particular park this time around and enjoy Magic Kingdom for two days. Below are a few of the rides/attractions that we enjoyed at the parks we visited:</p>

<p>Since we have a 5-year-old and we were with my elderly parents, we opted for fun-to-watch attractions and mild rides and, of course, we couldn’t skip the Elsa/Anna meet-up. However, parades take up a lot of time since you have to stake your spot early and just wait if you want a good view. The next time we go, we’ll probably skip most of the princess related attractions and parades and go for the thrill rides.</p>
<p><strong>Magic Bands, Fast Pass and Other Perks</strong></p>

If you stay in a Disney World resort, magic bands are included in your package. These are personalized wrist bands that you need to wear at all times to gain entrance to the parks, purchase food on your dining plan, gain Fast Pass+ access, etc. It basically contains your itinerary. Needless to say, these were extremely convenient to use. You may purchase these bands even if you decide not to stay in a DW resort.</p>
<p>Fast Pass+ service is included in your ticket or package. You’re allowed to gain Fast Pass+ access to up to three attractions per day. And if you miss a Fast Pass+ reservation, you may be able to add another one after all your reservations have been used for the day. I would highly recommend that you use these on the most popular attractions and reserve them early as there is a limited number of spots available for each time slot. We had Fast Pass+ access to Soarin’ at Epcot and we still ended up waiting about 20 minutes or so due to its popularity.</p>
<p>Another perk of staying at a Disney World resort is the Magical Express service. If your arrival time is before 10 PM and you have checked in luggage, the Disney staff will pick up your luggage from baggage claim for you and bring it to your hotel. All you have to do once you get off the plane is to go straight to the Magical Express shuttle to be taken to your hotel.</p>
<p>I seriously can go on and on about the ins and outs of Disney World that I learned during this trip. However, I need to end this post at some point. I’m very curious to hear about your experience at Disney World. And if you have any other questions, feel free to drop me a note.</p>

As I mentioned in my last post, the cold weather seems to be sapping my energy and keeping my motivation for any kind of activity very low. Well, I’m not ready to give in or give up. I am determined to not only survive this winter but actually enjoy it. No more wasting my time away wishing for spring. In order to make that happen, I put together what I’m calling a Winter Survival Guide. Here’s my list of tips, suggestions, good finds, etc., that will help you (and hopefully me) thrive during these chilly winter months.<span id="more-5550"></span></p>
<p><strong>1) Keep your face hydrated</strong> – I don’t know about you but my skin gets really thirsty in the winter. No matter how much moisturizer I slather on my face, I still feel patches of dryness. I’ve been using a face spray daily before my moisturizer and makeup in order to give my skin that extra hydration it needs. I’m currently using <a title="Urban Decay B6 Vitamin-Infused Complexion Prep Spray" href="http://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=432223341&pid=uid4900-24612570-61" target="_blank">Urban Decay B6 Vitamin-Infused Complexion Prep Spray</a> but I’m also planning to try <a title="Clinique Moisture Surge Face Spray" href="http://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=423820057&pid=uid4900-24612570-61" target="_blank">Clinique Moisture Surge Face Spray</a> and <a title="Evian Mineral Water Spray" href="http://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sephora.com%2Fmineral-water-spray-duo-to-go-P230538%3FskuId%3D1154897&pid=uid4900-24612570-61" target="_blank">Evian Mineral Water Spray</a>.</p>
<p><strong>2) Stock up on cozy fuzzy socks</strong> – when I got a pair of these soft fuzzy socks for Christmas a few years ago, I was thinking, “Where have you been all my life?” These fluffy socks are all I wear all winter long. You can get colorful ones like <a title="Women's Soft and Warm Fuzzy Sock Pack" href="http://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FWomens-Soft-Warm-Fuzzy-Packs%2Fdp%2FB009VUSDN6%2Fref%3Dpd_sim_a_15%3Fie%3DUTF8%26refRID%3D0YCGJGEZJ1DG8NPTHDFP&pid=uid4900-24612570-61" target="_blank">these</a> or neutral ones like <a title="MUK LUKS Women's 3-Pack Crew Socks" href="http://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.target.com%2Fp%2Fmuk-luks-women-s-3-pack-crew-socks-aloe-one-size-fits-most%2F-%2FA-15040473%23prodSlot%3Dlarge_1_5&pid=uid4900-24612570-61" target="_blank">these</a>. There is nothing better than warm and cozy feeling feet on a cold winter’s day.</p>
<p><strong>3) Enjoy a hot drink</strong> – this is your chance to indulge in all sorts of hot drinks from herbal tea to hot chocolate and cider and of course, coffee. I still remember thoroughly enjoying a nice cup of hot cider this past Thanksgiving at my brother’s and sister-in-law’s house. <p><strong>4) Soup does your body good</strong> – soothe your body and soul with a warm bowl of soup. I find myself wanting to make soup regularly during the winter months. I shared a <a title="Tuscan Soup" href="http://myrosecoloredshades.com/2014/01/09/recipe-highlight-tuscan-soup/">Tuscan Soup recipe</a> on the blog previously and my favorite <a title="The Lady's Chicken Noodle Soup Recipe" href="http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paula-deen/the-ladys-chicken-noodle-soup-recipe.html" target="_blank">Chicken Noodle Soup recipe</a> is the one from Paula Deen. My only adjustment to that recipe is that I use store-bought low sodium chicken stock instead of making my own.</p>
<p><strong>5) Read a “feel-good” or motivational book</strong> – the chicken noodle soup talk reminded me of the book, <a title="Chicken Soup for the Soul" href="http://www.chickensoup.com" target="_blank">Chicken Soup for the Soul</a>. If there’s a book out there that makes you feel good or even better, gets you fired up and re-energized for life, now is the time to read it. My favorite go-to book for motivation is <a title="The Purpose Driven Life" href="http://www.purposedriven.com" target="_blank">The Purpose Driven Life</a> by Rick Warren. I always find it to be a good reminder of my purpose and how I need to live my life.</p>
<p><strong>6) When the going gets tough, the tough keeps working out</strong> – the key to combatting those winter blues and the lack of energy and motivation that it brings, is to keep a regular workout routine. I seriously think that exercise is the only thing that keeps me going in the winter. My workout of choice is doing <a title="Title Boxing" href="http://titleboxingclub.com" target="_blank">kickboxing</a> 2-3 times a week. It’s a struggle to get myself to the gym but once I’m there and I finish a workout, it’s the best feeling.</p>
<p><strong>7) Plan a fun indoor activity to look forward to every weekend</strong> – weekends are busy but whenever we have a block of time available, we try to squeeze in a fun indoor activity like roller skating, going to the movies, bowling, etc. This way, you always have something to look forward to on the weekend, which in turn, helps with keeping you motivated during the week.</p>
<p><strong>8) If you can’t beat it, join it</strong> – I admit that I’m not a huge fan of outdoor activities in the winter but my kids love it so they’re always asking to go outside to play in the snow. A snow fight every now and then can be invigorating. My husband also takes the girls sledding when conditions are right. I remember, in my college days, how we used to “borrow” trays from the cafeteria and go sledding down this huge slope at my school. And of course, there’s always skiing. We haven’t tackled skiing as a family yet but that will probably change real soon.</p>
<p><strong>9) Good time to organize your closet/office/pantry</strong> – if the weather is keeping you indoors, then take advantage of it. Now is the best time to get to those home projects you’ve been pushing to the back burner. I know a lot of you have already accomplished this but my number one priority right now is to clean out my closet and the girls’ closets. I don’t know why it seems so daunting to me but I have no more excuses left. My study and kitchen pantry are next. They both could use some organizing and tidying up. <p><strong>10) Plan a trip to a warm destination</strong> – it’s always nice to break up the winter season by taking a trip to a warmer climate destination. If you have the time and money, now is the perfect time to get away. Fortunately, this year we’ll be taking a family trip to Disney World. Although I personally would have preferred Hawaii or the Caribbean, I’ll take Disney World any day if it means I’m getting away from the snow for a few days. If you’re low on budget, a weekend getaway to a water park a few hours drive away or even a local hotel with a big indoor pool may help break up the dreary monotony of winter.</p>

<p>My weekend starts today as our family of five packs into our swagger wagon and heads west for a long weekend in Chicago. We go there every year, mainly for leisure but also to get my hair done (will elaborate on this someday soon). I love Chicago because it has all the bells and whistles of a cosmopolitan city but somehow it’s more manageable than NYC. Although I spent over 10 years of my life in NYC, I think suburban life in Michigan has tamed me somewhat.</p>
<p>Chicago has, over the years, turned into the mecca for gastronomic adventures, which is what I live for. Unfortunately, because of the kiddos, I don’t get to try as many restaurants as I’d like to when I’m there. Our time will be spent mostly enjoying kid-friendly activities, eating at kid-friendly restaurants and spending most of our expendable cash at the American Girl store. Alas, I digress.</p>
<p>Well, guess what my job always is when it comes to family getaways? Yes, you guessed it, packing. Packing for myself and everyone else. I hear this weekend, out of all weekends, the temps will be going down to the upper sixties in Chicago. It’s that tricky temperature range that’s hard to pack for. Instead of shorts and tees, I’ll have to pack mostly long pants, long-sleeve shirts and a light jacket since I’m extra sensitive to cooler temperatures.</p>
<p>When it comes to quick getaways, I like to pack light (relatively) and keep my wardrobe neutral and interchangeable. I pare it down to essentials and throw in a couple of impractical items “just in case.” Yes, just in case my husband decides to surprise me with a romantic dinner and show for two while he’s also arranged for a trustworthy and competent babysitter to watch the kids for the night. The chance of this happening…in the negatives, but you never know. I digress again.</p>
<p>Sometimes neutral can mean an ensemble of functional but boring solids and that’s why I like to mix in a lot of stripes. Stripes are an easy way to add a little interest to a neutral wardrobe. I also try to throw in a bit of color via accessories. Comfortable shoes are a must, although I like to bring another dressier pair “just in case.” And lastly, I always bring a set of workout clothes and running shoes “just in case” I decide to go for a run. Now this one has a better chance of happening.</p>
<p>If I’m not debilitated by my girls’ incessant whining, I’ll try to take some pictures and share them on Instagram.</p>

Did I mention blue is one of my favorite colors? Just thought I’d reiterate it in case you hadn’t noticed. I kept it casual and monochromatic once again over this past weekend. I don’t know how many shades of blue you’ll find in this outfit but I figure there are at least fifteen. It’s hard to tell, but the Madewell chambray shirt alone has at least four shades of blue.</p>
<p>My family and I went on a short weekend getaway to Great Wolf Lodge, a water park resort, to take advantage of the girls’ mid-winter break. I’m not gonna lie, it’s not my first choice for weekend getaways. I don’t see the point of going to the pool or a water park, for that matter, if you can’t get a tan. But the girls had a blast so I guess it was worth it. I intended to take advantage of the change of scenery and work on my new outfit post from there but when we got there I realized that I had forgotten to bring the camera cable to download the pictures from the camera to my laptop. Rookie mistake…I’m still learning.</p>
<p>I didn’t realize until after I put this outfit together that almost everything I had on was from the Gap. I feel like I can always count on the Gap for comfy, casual yet chic clothes that can be dressed up or down for any occasion. I can’t say enough about my go-to Always Skinny jeans that I have featured several times before (<a title="Sweatshirt and Jeans" href="http://myrosecoloredshades.com/2013/11/11/outfit-highlight-sweatshirt-and-jeans/" target="_blank">here</a> and <a title="The Sweater Jacket" href="http://myrosecoloredshades.com/2014/01/30/outfit-highlight-the-sweater-jacket/" target="_blank">here</a>). I love the sequin-stripe tee, it’s casual with a bit of sparkle. I added the moto jacket and the cozy plaid scarf to complete the look.</p>
<p><strong>Today’s natural high:</strong> Never expected to find a local Vietnamese restaurant during our stay at Great Wolf Lodge, but we did and the food was pretty good. It was a nice break from the burger and fries and fast food restaurants.</p>
