Spring Trends – My Picks

I’ve been perusing online through my favorite shops to get a feel for this year’s spring trends. I’m making my wish list, which usually starts out really long and then whittles down to a handful of items. It all has to do with budget, fit and availability. But for now, here are my picks:

The Moto Jacket

It seems like moto jackets are still a thing of the present. I’m seeing them everywhere but in different shades of pastel this season, which adds a softer, more feminine touch. The three above are my favorites, especially the blush belted biker jacket from French Connection. By far the most popular pastel shade this season is blush and different shades of pink.

Perforated Sweaters and Mixed Stitching

Again, pastels are dominating the new crop of sweaters this spring. I’m really liking the perforated sweater trend. I’m also seeing a variety of stitching mainly from open stitching to waffle as well as mixed stitching like the Gap sweater above with ladder-stitch on the sleeves. Different hues of pink are popular in the knits category as well.

Printed Tops and Tunics

Zara Combined Printed T-Shirt | Halogen Cotton & Silk Shirt | Club Monaco Marlow Shirt

There’s been a definite creative leap forward when it comes to prints and patterns. We’re seeing a lot more mixing of patterns, intricate graphic prints, updated plaids and all sorts of grid prints. The floral prints this season have a darker backdrop. I’m seeing bright florals against black and darker shades of blue. The new Peter Pilotto collaboration with Target is a perfect example of florals combined with graphic prints intermingled with black. Tunics seem like the go-to top for spring every year and this season is no different. You can find tunics everywhere in different colors. The one above from Club Monaco stood out to me with its pleated back detail.

Track Pants, Side Stripes and Ankle Jeans

Hive & Honey Mel Slouchy Drawstring Pants | Express Stella Railroad Stripe Ankle Jeans | J.Crew Piped Andie Chino

Side stripes seem to be making their way down the trouser family chain. We saw them first on dressy tuxedo trousers and they eventually made their way to track pants, jeans and now chinos. I do love the simple red piping on the J.Crew chino above; a simple detail yet eye-catching. Ankle jeans, especially in lighter washes, seem to be the trend this spring. The ones from Express above have railroad stripes. J.Crew also has a version of the railroad stripes. And track pants, from what I’ve been hearing, people either love it or hate it. I guess more of us love it because they’re on the “new arrivals” list everywhere. I personally love them, mainly because of comfort, but pair them with high heels and you’ve got a really chic look.

Statement Sneakers, Booties and Cage Sandals

Nike Internationalist Sneaker | Zara Suede Leather Ankle Boot | Dolce Vita Hettie Sandal

Move over fashion wedge sneakers, retro style sneakers are making a comeback. I’ve always liked the retro look on sneakers so I’m glad to see Nike and New Balance offering their versions. They come in eye-catching, bright color schemes, like the one above. I like to call them statement sneakers. I think we’ve all finally figured out that booties look good with pretty much anything. They come in such a vast array of styles: pointy toe, open toe, open heel, perforated, high heeled, flat, you name it. I can’t take my eyes off of the Zara ones above. The color is so delicate and pretty! The double buckle and side zip detail keeps it modern. Cage sandals are also making a statement this season. I think they definitely add that extra flair to an outfit and although I didn’t think they would look good on my wide feet, I actually tried on a couple that I liked.

Today’s natural high: Speaking of different shades of pink, I’m so excited to be included in the ‘How I Wear My – Pink’ series on The Rich Life and Everything Just So. There are so many fabulous ways to style pink! You can also check out the ‘How I Wear My’ fan page here for this month’s post as well as previous editions.

  1. Those J. Crew Andie chinos are on my list, as are a pair of retro kicks! I can’t wear pastels though. Bummer, because that baby blue moto jacket is really cut.
