Weekly Wisdom: You Are God’s Masterpiece

God, Christ, Bible, faith, truth, Psalm 139, Ephesians 2:10

You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue, you Lord, know it completely. You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain… For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. ~Psalm 139:1-6; 13-15

This passage from Psalm 139 is one of my favorite passages in the Bible. It’s beyond my comprehension that a God so awesome and majestic knows me so intimately. How amazing is it to know that God created each one of us with the utmost love and care and that He is familiar with all of our ways. Every part of us was made with meaning and purpose. No part of us is an accident.

I am reading The Purpose Driven Life once again with my church’s small group and the second chapter of the book titled, “You Are Not an Accident,” was a great reminder that I was made for a reason, for a purpose. In this chapter, Rick Warren quotes a poem by Russell Kelfer, and the first two stanzas below really resonated with me and I think it’s something we all need to know and understand.

You are who you are for a reason.
You’re part of an intricate plan.
You’re a precious and perfect unique design,
Called God’s special woman or man.

You look like you look for a reason.
Our God made no mistake.
He knit you together within the womb,
You’re just what he wanted to make.

He says we’re “a precious and perfect unique design.” We are perfect because we were created in God’s image. And if we are perfect in God’s eyes, who are we to find fault in ourselves or anyone else for that matter? So when we try to change ourselves to be like someone else, we’re basically rejecting God’s impeccable workmanship.

We need to know who we are and whose we are. We are God’s children. We are the apple of His eye. “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago” (Ephesians 2:10). I think Psalm 100:3 sums it up pretty clearly, “Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.”

Have a blessed rest of the week!
