Outfit Highlight: Date Night in Detroit

IMG_1386prev3
My husband and I had a date night last Thursday. It was perfect weather for a night out. We enjoyed a nice casual dinner followed by a showing of The Book of Mormon at the Detroit Opera House. Thanks to my dear parents, the girls got to do a sleepover at their house, which was really nice because, for once, we didn’t feel like we had to rush back. These pictures were taken right after our dinner at Ottava Via, a nice little Italian restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere located in the Corktown district of Detroit. They have great sangrias and a delicious Funghi Pizza. I don’t like to get dressed up for shows unless it’s a special occasion. But I didn’t want to go completely casual either. I opted for simple and chic and ended up with a black and white outfit, as I often do.

After taking these pictures we decided to drive around the area to see some of the old historic buildings. The old Michigan Central Station (below) ran its last train 26 years ago and it’s still standing, once in its majestic glory and now a monumental ruin. It made me a little sad to think that Detroit was once a hustling and bustling city and now it’s practically a ghost town, at least some parts.

The Book of Mormon was hilarious and very entertaining, though I found some parts offensive. The lively chatter of the post show crowd made the night seem young so we decided to go for a walk. It had been so long since we had a chance to enjoy a quiet night alone without the kids, it was the perfect opportunity. After a couple of blocks of mostly closed stores and restaurants, we decided to make our way back. We noticed that the theater crowd had completely dissipated leaving us with the distant sound of chatter from the only open restaurant in the area. Despite the contradictory evidence, I can’t help but feel that this city has so much potential, that it will one day, hopefully soon, go back to the vibrant city of its heyday. We just have to wait and see.

  1. Such a chic and perfect date night outfit. I love black and white right now! The red wall is the perfect backdrop to let your outfit show. Your skirt reminds me of my trumpet one. I need to try styling it this way!

  2. Love the black and white combo. Can’t wait to have date nights – we are moving closer to my parents so hope to do the same sort of thing soon.

  3. Gorgeous outfit for a date. I recently (on Saturday) posted a Date Night Outfit too if you want to check it out. Love how the shape of the top and skirt are similar and play off one-another. You can never ever go wrong in Black+White. Polished as always my friend.

I am doing a link-up every day of the week this week featuring some Hot Summer Trends. Would love for you to feature an Outfit sometime. It will be open till the end of the day next Tuesday evening. Thanks Cynthia.

    • It’s a fictional Broadway musical about two young Mormon missionaries in Uganda. It’s by the creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone. It’s hilarious. Thanks for stopping by, Rachel!

  5. You are brave taking photos after dinner! If we have to take photos alongside a meal, I always demand before to avoid the food baby! haha! Not that you have anything to worry about! You look great as always. Sounds like a fun date night. You had me at Sangria!
